Want to really help the Atlas movie’s prospects? Watch it on the 2nd or 3rd weekend, as well.

From commenter David on the “Atlas Shrugged Fans Shock Theater Chains” post:

People are reporting that some theaters are already sold out for opening night. Hardcore fans are all going to the first night. The penetration among conservative blogs is huge, and positive.

But even if the first night does not sell out, my point stands. If only 50% of the seats sell on the first weekend, and 60% do on the second weekend, and 70% on the third… this will go wide. On the contrary, if you push everyone to go the first weekend and there’s a major dropoff in the 2nd and 3rd, the trend to the distributor will be clear. It’s all about the trend. I get this directly from someone in the movie biz. And he says weekdays don’t matter so much.

So you could actually be doing a disservice by getting everyone to the first weekend. Get them to the SECOND weekend.

Could not disagree more! The first week is everthing. If the first week is not strong there will not be a 2nd or 3rd week. Theaters will pick it up from a strong 1st week–but not if it is just okay. See it a second time the 2nd or 3rd week. But word of mouth and a strong opening weekend will spread the word and help the following weeks to come.

Totally disagree. If the first week is not great there will not be a 2nd or 3rd.

It’s true that the first weekend must be big enough, yes. But as we hear more reports of theaters selling out, we will know that is being accomplished.

Just bear in mind that the decision to “go wide” is based primarily on whether demand is increasing or decreasing on subsequent weekends.

Perhaps the best strategy, at this moment, is to go on the first weekend, and then plan to take a larger number of friends and family on the 2nd and 3rd weekends.

Another tip I gave on an earlier thread: “Go to one of the major chain theaters, who have the ability to take this huge without any effort on the part of the distributor. They are: Regal/UA/Edwards, AMC, Cinemark. Carmike is pretty big, too.”

    They’re both correct.

The first 3-day weekend is crucial.

The second and third 3-day weekends are crucial.

Assuming it comes to my town the first weekend, I’ll be going 3 times the first weekend and at least once every weekend thereafter… as long as it is playing. If you want the ideas in Atlas Shrugged to diffuse into the culture at large, plan to watch the movie at least 5 times, and urge all your friends to watch it twice (to catch everything that’s not obvious the first view).

I saw the opening Friday night at a huge theatre in liberal Austin, Texas.

It was sold out, and the crowd was enthusiastic.
