Box Office Mojo reports that the Atlas Shrugged movie grossed $683,000 on Friday.
This figure puts it in 13th place for total receipts and 3rd place for average receipt per theater ($2,277 per theater) — narrowly behind Scream 4 ($2,421 per theater) and Rio ($2,666 per theater).
This bodes well for the further release — if the film can keep drawing people at the current rate.
UPDATE (4/16) - Box Office Mojo characterizes Atlas Shrugged as a “wild card:”
The weekend also sees the release of director Robert Redford‘s The Conspirator at 707 locations and Atlas Shrugged: Part I at 300 locations. Despite some television advertising, Conspirator is not likely to be more than a blip, while Atlas Shrugged is more of a wild card. The latter’s generated buzz simply by being the first-ever adaptation of Ayn Rand’s popular and influential novel of the same name and due to its topicality, having been cast as the first “Tea Party” movie.
UPDATE (4/16) – According to Showbuzz Daily:
Atlas Shrugged Part I, despite some of the worst reviews of the decade, should do around $8-9K per theatre at 300 (putting The Conspirator‘s theatre number in the shade), probably indicating concerted response to the marketing effort aimed at “tea party” groups and other presumed Ayn Rand fans.
